Historic Veauce Castle With Extensive Restoration Potential
About the Property
Historic Veauce Castle, the largest private castle in Allier, France, is a remarkable edifice with origins dating back to the 11th century. Perched on a rocky spur overlooking the Veauce and Guêle valleys, this strategic site was heavily fortified in the 13th century, showcasing a regular plan and circular towers characteristic of medieval defensive architecture. The estate spans over 10 hectares and is organized around a large main courtyard, although it currently requires extensive restoration work estimated between €2 million and €5 million. Veauce Castle has a storied past, having become a royal fief in the 14th century and later owned by the Dukes of Bourbon. It played an active military role during the Hundred Years’ War and is said to have hosted illustrious figures such as Joan of Arc. The castle retains significant medieval remains, complemented by Renaissance modifications and extensive modernization in the 19th century under Charles Eugène de Cadier, who also developed the surrounding village. Partially classified and listed as a Historic Monument, Veauce Castle stands as a major witness to Auvergne’s history, still enveloped in the legend of the ghost Lucie. The property is currently in very poor condition, with some living quarters severely deteriorated. Price: €800,000 including fees (paid by the seller).
